Common Mistakes in Landing Page Design

When visitors reach your website the page that they see first is called the landing page. It is important to implement a good search engine optimization (SEO) strategy for web designing so that the landing page is effective enough to maximize conversion rates. The landing page creates the first impression on the visitors’ minds when they reach your website and thus, this page should be designed effectively to generate sales. It is important to keep the landing page design marketing oriented. Often, webmasters commit several design errors while developing the landing page and fail to identify the elements that should go or not go into the landing page in order to drive sales. Discussed below are some of these common errors.

Slow loading

No one would like to wait for a long time before a page opens. If you overload the landing page with embedded video, audio, heavy image files and flash animations it make the loading process slow. A large section of the Internet users use slow connections and it becomes frustrating for these users to wait for the page to load for too long. As a result, the traffic might be driven away. Therefore, it is advisable to use small thumbnail images on the landing page. Audio and video files can be linked from the landing page instead of placing them on the page. Also, it is good to avoid ‘plug-in’ requests for the visitors for playing animations or other such files.

Misleading URL and title

There are high probabilities of a potential customer turning away from the landing page if the title does not match with the page content or inbound link. Unless the visitors find what they were searching for, they might go away. It is disappointing for them find that the title of the page does not answer their query.

Complicated ‘Call to Action’ elements

The ‘Call to Action’ element has similar importance as tracking the conversion rates. This element initiates the conversion process. The primary objective of a landing page is to make conversions. Thus, the Call to Action element on the page should be clearly accessible and all necessary instructions must be clearly given. Chances of conversion will improve if the process involves clear instructions and simple actions.

Limited options for building customer base

Although it is rare that a visitor will buy your product or service on the first visit, it is possible that the visitor might choose for a subscription or monthly newsletters. Besides ‘Call to Action’ elements, the landing page must have all such options so that even if the conversion does not happen in the first time, possibilities are open to convert this visitor to a potential customer at a later phase.

Inappropriate marketing content

It is very difficult for an SEO company to determine the extent of marketing content that they can use in the landing page. Sometimes, excessive marketing content can make the page too heavy and might lead to distraction. Therefore, it is important to understand the nature of your business and then prepare the ad content.
