The New Look of Delicious.com

Friday, August 21st, 2009

The new series of upgrades in Delicious has revolutionized the appeal of social media marketing. These new upgrades have increased the relevance of social bookmarking more than it has ever been in years! Some of these latest upgrades include fresh bookmarks, improved search functionality, and new sharing features.
The new Fresh Bookmarks tab is one of the most popular upgrades that have replaced the ‘Popular Bookmarks’ tab which used to be the default view of Delicious. The pages listed under this tab are indexed through a new algorithm. The parameters considered for indexing include the pages bookmarked by the users of delicious.com and the topics that are discussed among Twitter users. Some of the common topics that are covered in these fresh bookmarked pages include web, politics, technology, media, etc. Along with this there is a new search function that allows you to search using the ‘filter by tag’ option. The sharing feature introduces the new ‘Send’ tab that appears at the time of saving bookmarks
These upgrades are great news for all those who use delicious. com regularly. Moreover, these features will now attract more people to submit their pages to social bookmarking sites to improve their search engine rankings . Social media marketing  has added a new dimension to search engine optimization, SEO techniques and SEO professionals are now opting for social networking sites for securing better search engine placement.

Make the Most of Your Top Performing Keywords

Friday, August 21st, 2009

The performance of all keywords is never equal.  Experts believe that 80% of the impact is generated by 20% of the causes. Search engine marketing is no different than this. It has been observed that only 1% of the keywords used in an account are capable of driving 50% of the total revenue. This means that these keywords are the value keywords and top performers. Therefore, to make your search engine marketing campaign successful adequate measures must adopted to increase the visibility of these keywords or terms.
To do this, you have to first identify and isolate these keywords by running a keyword report. This report will help you in sorting the data by cost. Based on this report, you may then figure out the top performing terms. At the same time, you can also figure out the terms that are present in this set of keywords, which do not generate sufficient sales. This is very important, especially if your pay per click program or search engine marketing campaign is focused on the return on investment.
Once identified and isolated you can place them in unique AdGroups. This will help in increasing the quality score. Moreover, placing the keywords in AdGroups will help in creating more relevant landing page associations, and also improve the click through rates. As a result, the cost per click will also come down.
Be it a pay per click program, search engine optimization or any other search engine marketing campaign, identification of the top performing keywords are the ones that brings in most revenue in the account. However, accounts with thousands of terms may not find it difficult to figure out all significant keywords, and thus should focus on a small section of terms which have a positive impact on the account.

Press Tab to Search Google?

Friday, August 14th, 2009

Google seems to be on the verge of doing something big. The reason for saying this is that we’ve seen a lot of activity concerning Google. We saw the launch of Google Wave (for developers only, yet) and Google released ‘Caffeine’ for developers and public to test it out. Google also shifted the sponsored links column a bit to the left and there seems to be a lot of testing with the Google SERP itself with dropdowns and what not. Today, I noticed that using Chrome you can directly search Google from the address bar (a la Launchy).

As seen below if you start typing Google in the bar, it suggests that you press tab to search Google

And when you press tab it gives you suggestions on what to do:

So, when you start typing in your keyword, Chrome gives you the option of seeing pages in your recent histroy related to that keyword

What Next?

Right now, Google lets you search some sites directly from the SERP (search for Flickr), so the only thing I can think of, for this handy addition, is when you start typing flickr in the address bar you press tab and then you can search Flickr !

Also this works only in Chrome……………for now.

Google Shifts the Sponsored Links Column

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Did you notice the Google search result page a little more crowded than before? The sponsored links column just got shifted a little more towards the left and does grab more attention while you scan results. This does seem to be an attempt towards getting more people to click on the paid listings, especially users with wide screens.

A Google spokesperson confirmed that it “shifted the ads to the left on the page as a way to help users find what they are looking for on the Internet.”

HTML 5 – SEO Perspective

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

While many believe that HTML 5 will not come into play until 2022 (yeah right), we’ve already begun seeing websites that have started using HTML 5 and with the bigwigs supporting and backing it all the way (think Google Wave), HTML 5 is already upon us.
Before I delve into the SEO perspective lets take a look at basics of HTML 5 first. HTML 5 has many tags some of which I’ll briefly explain :

  • Header : Can contain primary information about the page following it or the article, blog post following it. I say page or blog post/article because the header can be specified multiple times on a page as seen in the image below
  • Navigation : Can contain links to different sections of the page or the site
  • Section : Specifies a section of the page containing an article or a blog post or whatever you deem fit. It is similar to the <div> tag we use now
  • Article : Will contain the main content of the page and can act as the primary focus of your page
  • Aside : Can contain supplementary or related information to the page or the site
  • Footer : Can be used multiple ties on the page like the header

The structure of a page in HTML 5 will look like the image below from an article back at Smashing Magazine.

HTML 5 Structure

HTML 5 Structure

What this is means is that instead of specifying <div id="header">, you will now write it as <header> – as simple as that. Of course my favourite feature of HTML 5 would be the Doctype – hands down. Instead of <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> we now have <!DOCTYPE html> – Clean and simple. So apart from the  aesthetic beauty (which I’m all gaga about) of HTML 5, what does it mean for SEO? Now, because we will explicitly specify what goes where, the page will be broken down into appropriate components which will be standard across all pages.

Now for a page like the one in the image above, if a spider visits the site it knows exactly that the header tag will give primary info about the following article or page and aside will usually signify additional information related to the article or the site. So the spider gives more importance to the proper tags instead of spidering the whole page. This would then imply that it would take faster for a page to get spidered, saving loads of time for the search engines and maybe higher crawl rates(?). It would also mean that the spider would get better content thus translating into better user experience.

It was sad to see Ian Hickson drop the video codecs due to opposition from Nokia and Apple, because the video tag would have translated into a whole new way in which videos could be optimised. This would have helped sites that use video content implement video optimisation as a new step in their SEO process.

Now, with rumours flying around that Google plans to implement Twitter-like real time search to its arsenal, we could be entering into a period where a SEO process could be changing dramatically. HTML 5 has taken its first steps into the web world and atleast theoretically, it can change the landscape of the SEO World – whether it does or not, is something we will have to wait and see!

Bing v/s Google – The Big Fight!

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Microsoft recently launched a new search engine by the name “BING”. It is said to be an up gradation of the live search which Microsoft had earlier. It has gained a lot of popularity since its launch and has been compared to “Google”. But there are a few things that I experienced while using both the search engines and would like to share them with you’ll:

Starting with Bing, must say that it is better than Live search. It has a great user environment as compared to Google. It has a simple white background, which makes it more appealing. As far as search goes, Bing categorizes search results as Videos, News etc. and displays these options as a part of the left navigation, which helps users to directly jump on the desired category result for which search query was made. It tries to include almost all features that Google has, like image search and videos etc. the video search is more fun as the video actually starts playing when you hover your mouse over it. Technically speaking, it has a very good design and a great combination of plug-ins and modules put together – All in all a great user experience.

But I still feel that Google is much better than Bing. The reason being, Google provides more search results as compared to Bing, in fact more than double. Bing includes spell check, where it rectifies the spelling mistakes without user confirmation, where as Google asks the user for confirmation. Speaking from a brand perspective, Google is a much trusted brand than any other search engine. Only a Google logo or a “result provided by Google” tag makes it more trusted by the user. Google has been in this industry for a long time and people trust Google for everything, as said by some – “if you have any doubt, ask Google”.

Bing is a good search engine with lots of potential which would probably grow with time, and could be said, a very good step forward by Microsoft in the search market.

Search Engine Optimization

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Search engine optimization in internet marketing is a topic not many people are aware of. To update you a bit on SEO, here are some of the basics of search engine optimization. SEO can benefit your website in many ways.

SEO is basically optimizing your website in the best possible way to draw the attention of major search engines like Google, Yahoo etc.

Some of the most important things to be taken care of during the initial SEO Campaign are:

Keyword AnalysisKeyword Analysis is the most important part of the whole SEO Campaign. Targeting the right keywords for your website could be the most challenging task, especially if your site has a restricted niche value. One of the methods for Keyword research is using the Google Keyword Tool . The main ideas to keep in mind as you create your keyword list are the Search Volumes and the Competition for a particular keyword.

On Page Optimization – Another important step in SEO process is the on page optimization for your website.

1. Using the correct Page Titles – As the titles of your pages hold a lot of weight in SEO, it’s important that they are optimized effectively.

2. Use effective Meta Description and Meta Keywords Tag – Earlier meta data used to be important in terms of Search Engine Optimization and helped a website rank for the terms used. However in the last few years meta data has been irrelevant for ranking purpose. But writing an effective meta description is preferred as it is the piece of text that appears underneath your title in search results and also gives the user an opportunity to see if your site is relevant for their search query.

3. Importance of Header Tags – Every page of your website should preferably consists of the <H1> tag. Try to be creative when designing your SEO web pages and insert the most important headers at the top of the page using your keywords.

4. Content and Internal Linking – Content is the key to search engine rankings. Ensure that your website has enough content to support the keywords that you are targeting. Use internal links as they carry more weight in search engines.

These are just a few search engine optimization basics. Go for Search Engine Optimization to improve traffic for your website.
